Empire Fair Salutes Missouri Animals Through Petting Zoo

Uhm, yeah gross.

Springfield MO- The Ozark Empire Fair is no stranger to petting zoo’s, but this year has a very specific theme: local Ozark’s fauna. From the cicada to the mosquito, numerous animals are put on display for children of all ages. The children are asked not only to view the animals, but to interact with them through physical touch, squashing them, feeding them, and butchering them.

Animals on display are the: dog chained to a post, feral cat, cicadas, road killed armadillo, mosquito, cow, pig, crawdads, and a 6 foot deep snake pit.

“We are very excited about the zoo,” states carney third class Billy Bloodstone. “When you see those little kids pet a copperheard, or have a cicada walk on their face, it just warms my heart. The children probably hate it, but I just hate kids so it is a blast for us carney folk.”

The most impressive element of the zoo is the “Mosquito House”. There children can walk about the domed structure seeing the various species of mosquitoes fly around their head. Bags of blood are hung though out the dome giving children various stations to view the insects. Also children are able to buy their own bags of blood to hand feed the mosquitoes, or simply let the curious creatures feed on their arms.

“Ahhh, why did we do this?” states Gregory Birds, a pleased parent. “They are everywhere!”

Other interactive exhibits include a “cicada dig”, “pet a sheep then butcher it for dinner“, “bobbing for live crawdads”, and “bear baiting”.

“It clawed my tongue,” states a 6-year-old Molly Gordan as she proudly shows the crawdad she just caught with only her mouth. “I felt its feelers tickle my uvula. It was awesome.”

The zoo will be open for the duration of the fair and then all the animals will be released into their nature environments: Springfield neighborhoods and parking lots.
