Springfield MO – City officials announced today that the new City Utilities Southwest 2 power plant is such a big hit with the public, that plans for a new Southwest 3 power plant will soon be on its way. “After Southwest 2 was completed, I met with construction and union people and we all agreed we had one issue in common and that was “What are we going to do now?”, commented Springfield mayor Jim O’Neil. “The Southwest 2 power plant will only meet needs until 2020. That is just a 10-year life span. To meet future power needs, the solution is simple and that is build another power plant only just a little different. The new Southwest 3 power plant will run on wood with a propane gas back up.”
“This is a winning situation for everyone,” added O’Neil. “First of all it keeps the construction and electrical workers jobs right here in Springfield instead of losing them elsewhere like Ozark or Nixa. It will also add future wood cutting jobs. Since trees are one thing we can grow locally it will reduce our dependence on imported coal. Also by burning wood, we can throw on a few thousand slabs of ribs and have them cook in the smoke overnight making Springfield a barbecue destination like Kansas City. This creates more restaurant jobs. I can tell you that as a businessman and now as mayor, developing the economy of our area and growing jobs depend greatly on the availability of reliable affordable power and great barbecue.”
Voters have already approved funding for SW3 a few years ago when a bond was passed in a close election for SW2. “The bond back then said that construction of a power plant should be built to meet the electric needs of the people of Springfield. It did not say how many power plants could be built to meet those needs. So we will start construction soon and the cost overrun will be determined at a later date. SW3 will be the brightest star in the constellation of power plants and fine dining,” commented CU spokesman John Giddy.
