Springfield, MO—Neighborhood dogs are getting an upgrade that no one would have expected thanks to local firefighters efforts to make fire hydrants more visible. Teams are currently working to repaint all 7,000 hydrants with a brighter, more reflective paint, which will improve urinal locations for all canines.
“I’m just so excited that the City is going to this measure to help out our mutts who can’t seem to find a wee-wee spot late at night,” said Newton Fillery, an owner of three shih tzu pups. “I can usually find the dogs favorite hydrant after about 15 minutes looking around the area, but now, whoa boy, its going to be a whole lot easier for Flopsie, Hopsie and Plopsie to do their business,” he continued.
A spokesperson for the Fire Department said the measure was approved as it was intended to promote safety and help firefighters shave seconds off the time it took to locate plugs; the added “benefit” was not foreseen. Local firefighter Rip Muhshertoff said, “Aw man. This is not such a good idea in hindsight. Not only do I have to risk my life during the wee hours of the morning, now I’ll have to deal with dog whiz before I extinguish life threatening flames.”
Paint crews have already finished several locations are claim that the project is moving along without many setbacks. Crew chief Norman Gillhoss said, “we have encountered, on occasion, a woodland creatures who took an interest in our work before the paint had time to dry. Unfortunately, a few rabbits and squirrels are now day glow green, but we expect predators to take them out soon enough as they are clearly visible even in the darkest of hiding places.”
