Springfield, MO—Drivers of classic cars spent a good deal of time this past weekend driving around town waving to each other. The friendly sign of acknowledgement was displayed whenever one driver of a historic vehicle crossed paths with another driver of a restored antiquated mode of transportation.
The preferences for cars from a bygone era induced hundreds of car owners to rod their rides into town for the Mid-America National Street Rod Association, held at the Ozark Empire Fairgrounds. With a simple flick of the wrist, classic car owners can say, “I see that you spent an ungodly amount of time fixing up old crappy cars to look kinda good, just like me.”
Wembly Sever, owner of a 1937 Cord 812 Sedan said, “I’ve been stuck in my garage working on my car for months on end; I’m just happy to see other people so I’m waving at everyone I come across.”
Dr. Imogene Yuli said, “This motion of the hand, this movement, acts as a method of communication. It is essentially an invitation to embrace the brotherhood that binds together people of common interests and passions.”
The “hand hello” hasn’t always been the preferred symbol of choice. In fact, last year the NRSA had to implement a ban against fist bumps while driving due to an increase in accidents. The ban has essentially reinstating the hand wave, once again, as the accepted from of shared passion for automated transportation of vehicles 25+ years in age.
