Smoke Shop goes as expected
Springfield, MO – Firefighters in Springfield smoked out a blaze that broke out at a discount smoke shop in a strip mall on Battlefield west of Scenic. “Smoke was coming out of the Smoke Shop”, said Smokey Ronnie of Southwest Springfield.
Battlefield Deputy Fire Chief Mick Smores says it was someone in the store next door who smelled smoke, heard the alarms, and made the call to put out the blaze. “We recorded the call,” said Smores, “and we had a difficult time understanding the situation at first. All we heard was ‘Smoke…Shop, Smoke Shop, smoke, in the shop, the shop is in smoke, the Smoke Shop is smoking,’” said the experienced fireman.
Responders were initially skeptical of the call as the Smoke Shop should have smoke inside but once a first responder arrived they understood that the Smoke Shop was smoking to a different tune. “We saw….smoke…coming from the Smoke Shop and immediately began applying pressure to subdue the….smoke,” said firefighter Sal Simsmokron.
Smoke initially closed the area, but smoke displacement equipment was placed along the road by authorities to blow smoke away from traffic along Battlefield between Golden and Meadowlark. “I saw the smoke from the Smoke Shop and thought that place is smoked,” said Laird Burrlison who lives next door to the former Smoke Shop location.
Crews from Willard, Republic, Springfield, Nixa, and Logan Rogersville were all called in to help extinguish the smoking Smoke Shop.
