Around this time every year, I write an article about songs or maybe groups that we should be thankful for. This time I am going a little further, I want to feature someone we should all be thankful for and that is the drummer. Yes, I am talking about the Ringos, the Moons, the Tommy’s, the Wild Cards, the Addicts, the Crazy Ones. If it wasn’t for the drummer, there would be no Rock before the Roll. So this month let’s pay homage to some of the songs with my favorite drum solos.
In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida – Iron Butterfly Growing up my dad would swear by the drum solo in this song, saying how he would listen to this until his dad, my grandfather, would burst in the room and scream, “DO THESE SONGS EVER END?!?!” No they don’t grandpa, no they don’t.
Mody Dick – Led Zeppelin What drum solo list would be complete without the mother of all drum solos. I have heard that Led Zeppelin actually wrote this song around his drum solo, which has been used to defeat terrorists.
My Generation – The Who The drum solo at the end of this song by Moon the Loon was way ahead of its time. If you listen to what other drummers were doing when they recorded this, you won’t hear anything like it. That’s probably because Moon was also the first drummer to take lots of speed.
Wipeout – The Ventures This is usually the first drum solo all drummers learn. It is also the first time they realize they can get chicks if they do drum solos.
2112 – Rush Neil Peart is God. Simple as that. When the aliens finally reveal themselves to us, they will do so only to take Neil Peart back to their home planet.
