Springfield, MO—A taste of the Middle Ages is coming to the Ozarks, housed in a classic building with a long and storied past. In October, Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament will occupy the space formerly used by casual dining tenant Steak and Ale Restaurants.
The parent company of Steak & Ale filed for chapter 7 bankruptcy protection in July of 2008, which closed 200 locations nationwide, including the Springfield, MO franchise. The closure opened the door for another operator with a penchant for the past.
The 11th century-style dinner attraction found the property to possess the same characteristics and qualities that resonate with other castles used in medieval pageantry.
The Springfield location will boast a unique feature that the other nine diner theater chains do not have: a drive through window. “Our drive-thru gives customers 21st century convenience with 11th century cuisine,” said a spokesman for the chain. Wenches will serve the drive-thru customers while the dark knight challenges the driver of the vehicle to a joust right as the meals have been delivered, within 4-6 minutes of placing the order.
Area foodies are excited to experience the medieval tradition of royal families inviting guests to a festival and feast to watch knights compete on horseback. “Okay, okay who’d win: the Dixie Stampede cowboys or Medieval Times knights…I’d love to see that battle!” said Vinnie Cash, Nixa resident.
Local medieval combat recreationists eagerly anticipate the grand opening of the restaurant scheduled November 14th. “We usually practice at the park on National and Sunset, however, now we will be able to use the arena for actual battles every month,” said Herb Youngston, who was recently hired as a waiter for Medieval Times. “I would have given my left longsword to make this happen. Now that we have a Medieval Times castle here in out town, I can die in peace each time I am thwarted on the battlefield,” he continued.
